I knew about these caves from Niroshan’s trip report and I thought to explore these caves. The actual name of this cave complex is “Rotupihilla Limestone Caves”. There are five main caves and those are situated in different places.
Chandare Mama is a very old and very innocent man in this village called Ekiriya. He is the only one that who explored these caves for many times. Without him we couldn’t walk along the caves and the jungle. As per the practical experiences, there are many Cobras and Vipers lived in this jungle.
We can go up to the Chanadre Mama’s house and park our motor bicycles over there. And then we moved into the forest from the behind of his house. After we walked about 100m we came to a water stream and walked along the water stream for 75m. And then we entered to the first cave which is situated at our left side. That is a open cave and it’s a simple cave as there are so long walking area. After that we entered to the second cave which is at the other side.
That cave is totally different, because there was an underground water stream inside of this cave and reaching to that place is little bit difficult. Because that area was fully wet and the rocky plain is also slippery. The inside water stream is very cold and clear. There we saw some origins of fresh water streams which are coming out from the Limestone. That is really amazing, that water coming out like from a hose.
We spend much time inside of the cave and walked somewhere to see the natural limestone patterns. Then we entered to another open cave which is situated close to this cave. After that we came out and got entered to the previous mentioned first water stream and walked up to the Rotupihilla bathing place.
We had a small wash since there were mud in our legs and cloths. After that we walked 300m to the forth cave which is situated at the jungle and it’s the hardest cave to explore. From the entrance you have to walk from both legs and hands since there is not any place to get stand inside of the cave. There were 2 separate roads and the main tunnel is a like half circle. We explored the cave about 100m and then we met another tunnel which was situated 01 feet above from the ground.
This cave experience is totally dangerous and amazing. We must carry good and powerful LED torches. Finally we came to the fifth cave which is situated 100m away from the forth cave.
By the way we spend about 3-4 hours to explore these caves deeply and have some adventurer
caving experience on these caves.
